Please forgive me if I am posting out of turn as I am not a teacher but am
enquiring on behalf of a friend who has not got home internet access to
newsgroups. I shall ask the question discreetly and see what replies I
get.
My friend has just left their full time primary teaching job after 12
years in a stressful London school. This person is now working as a
supply teacher through an agency in the NE London area. I am a little
surprised that the person is earning £110 per day gross and wish to
enquire whether this is normal for agencies. This is a much lower figure
than they were getting on their full time salaried position. I always
thought that supply teachers earned more pro-rata to cover unpaid holiday
times. They are happy in their work as they do not have to worry about
preparation and Offsted inspections etc.
<snip>
Is the rate of £110 per day the going supply rate or is there another way<snip>
of improving the pay by changing agency or attempting to contract direct
with a school.
This rate does seem low. Has your friend tried contacting other agencies to
find out what rates they are offering? Some agencies offer guaranteed
work/salary which can affect rates of pay.
Other people I know in the same situation have simply sent a circular letter
to local schools and have quickly collected a group of schools for whom they
regularly work. The schools like having their own bank of supply teachers
because they know the person who is coming and that they will be up to doing
the job.
Some LEAs are now running their own supply pool again. These should work on
a day rate of 195th of annual salary at whatever position the teacher is on
the pay scale. For example:
