For good or ill it is the industry standard after all.
What standard is that? "Most common" is not the same as "standard".
It is a de facto standard.
It's
not even the most common in many industries - in the arts,
Not an industry I know well, but I know Macs are quite common.
in science,
What is the most common operating systems used in science then?
Whilst I'm not a fan of Windows myself (see my signature for what I think of Windows), Windows is in my experience the most common operating system used in science - in both industry and university.
Sure Linux is very common when a lot of computational power is needed, but I suspect the number of hours that scientists use Windows exceeds that of all other operating systems put together.
If you want to exclude writing papers and writing PhD theses, then you might be right, but writing is a big part of science.
My last job as a scientist I was writing software for a digital signal processor chip. The hardware used its own real-time operating system. But the development tools were only available on Windows. That is very common.
Prior to that I worked at Marconi. Myself and a student I supervised where using HP-UX to write some numerical simulation software, but most of the lab used just Windows. And both of use used Windows too - in fact, access to the HP machine was via a windows machine.
in design, in Internet service provision.
Agree there. It will be a UNIX like operating system.
It does seem to be the
favoured platform for general drudge-style work though.
True.

I must prefer Solaris myself and think it is technically better than Windows, but I have never worked anywhere where the use of Solaris/Linux or other operating system is more common than Windows.
