Surely teachers are best placed to decide if their kids will fit into a
school or not. Now bad kids can drag all our schools down in the name of
cultural marxism.
So you can't pick the nice middle class white kids any more. If your
school isn't robust enough to deal with a few difficult kids, it's
probably failing the rest of them anyway.

Problem is going to arise when a school has massive over-subscription. In
fact if you take catchment areas that is unfair too. Invariably one school
is in the middle class area of the town and gets all those middle class
kids from the posh houses and another is on the other side of the tracks.
I remember the ballot for GM status at a governors meeting where the
school governors at which I was a parent governor were saying no need for
a ballot, we are unanimous, it would be unfair if we went GM. So I said
Ok, we want fairness, we are on the middleclass side of town, top of the
league tables, let's offer say 200 places to the most deprived families
from the side of town that has two low performing schools. Stunned horror.
Of course we don't want to be *that* fair do we?
Maybe a better way would be to test all the kids and use the tests to
ensure that each school had intakes representative of a normal
distribution for the wider local area. If not just give everyone vouchers
and have done with it ;-)
