In a previous school, as we only had a part time sec, we bought a
cordless phone, so that it could sit on someone's desk when the sec had
gone home (my desk when the HT was out). If a call was for an individual
teacher a child would take the handset to the teacher concerned, and
wait to bring it back. The handset would even work on the playing field.

Thinner walls than our (Victorian built) school then. It manages to get
two classes away, but no further.

Old-fashioned post-Victorian building built around a framework of metal
girders, so we were surprised it worked so well.
