My thanks to everybody for the sympathy and hugs. I'm still feeling a

For ever?
That is the subject of debate at the moment. I feel I really
shouldn't commit myself to unnecessary spending in the run up to
retirement. The rats themselves cost about five pounds each, but the
vet bills can be huge. Small animals need very fine, intricate and
time-consuming surgery. And a consultation costs the same whether the
animal is a rat or a great dane. The bottles of medicine are smaller,
but that is about the only advantage of small size pets. Should I be
risking that kind of unplanned-for outlay when my income is scheduled
to drop so severely? On the other hand, I love little furry things.
Can I resist? Should I resist?
Chances are, I'll wander into a pet shop sometime in the Autumn and
succumb to another batch of treasures. I mustn't do it before the
summer - too much going on with my holiday booked, and my grandchild
due at the end of July. Petshops are absolutely out of bounds this
summer!
Boy do I understand!
I have my two monsters...<cough> babies, and this morning was
incredibly upset to find that two kittens were run over, probably by
the truck that entered the street early on. What really upsets me
most, though, is that I heard a bit of wailing but it sounded like a
dog, so I didn't go investigate. We have a few dog owners whose dogs
have similar noises. I wonder if I had gone to investigate, if at
least one of those little treasures would still be alive, or, that
they at least might not have suffered so much if I'd found them... :-

you, Liz!>
