My pedometer also rattles when I walk. It also lies. But it lies in
the other direction; it reports anything between 0 and 100% of my
steps. I don't rely on it any more. I count my steps personally,
using fingers to record the hundreds. I have a few "landmarks" whose
distance from my home I know, so I don't have to count all the time.
I can even say "Good morning" to people without losing count, but a
proper conversation would destroy the count.
