I think word recognition comes easily to some children and not to others, DS is in kindergarten and he does recognise some words, but not simple ones, he doesn't instantly see the difference between "and" and "the" for example, but he has regonised the word marshmallow for ages! ... I think reading is one of those things that children learn very differently, there are some very bright people out there who weren't reading until 6 or even older, but there are others who read very young who are bright but not outstanding later in life. ... His current teacher, when I was talking to her last year, encouraged me to try and teach him that if you want to be able to do something you have to practice and for this something to not be reading at that point in time. ...
