I have the following equation to solve:
cosh^2(x) + sinh^2(x) = 0.2

Substituting with the identity cosh(2x) = 0.2 = 1/2(e^2x+e^-2x) and
forming a quadratic,
I end up with a quadratic equation with a discriminant less than
zero, which makes the solution a complex number

Where have I gone wrong?

You've gone wrong only in thinking that the solutions should not be
complex!

Hang on a minute
Do you mean the solution is a complex number?

I come up with e^2x = 0.2 + j0.98 and e^2x = 0.2 - j0.98

That can't be right because I don't know how to proceed from there
