I suggest you work in one unit, after converting early in the calculation.
In this case, you want an answer in square nm, work in nm from the
beginning.

It isn't. It seems you've not allowed for the squaring of the dimensions.
Eg.
1 sq cm isn't 10 sq mm, it is 100 sq mm. , ie a square 10mm x 10 mm.
