You think that's bad? Some years ago the university engineering
department I worked for opened a new building. Floors were Ground,
First, Third, Second and Fourth. However, they were numbered as the
builders had done them, starting with floor 00 (basement) then 01
(intermediate loading level) then 02 (ground), 03 (first). The lift,
however, called the floors B (basement) G (intermediate) 1 (ground) 2
(first) and so on. Except that you had to specify relative floors to
move the lift. So if you were on the first floor (03) and wanted to go
to the fourth floor (06) you pressed "+3" and got off when the
indicator said "5".
This scheme did not, fortunately, last long. We made a lot of new
friends while it did.
