Either way. If you had subscripts 0, 1, 2, 3, ... for a variable "a",
you'd say "a1, a2, a3, ...", or could say, "a sub 1, a sub 2, ..."
If the subscript itself is a variable, you'd be better saying "a sub
x" for clarity, rather than "ax" for example. But if there is no
doubt, then again either way will do.
Language of any sort is a wonderful gift, but all have their
limitations as well as advantages. I wouldn't get too wound up with
it.
