fraction question

when a petrol tank is 7/12 full, it contains 5 1/4 gallons. How many
gallons does it hold when full?

i know the answer is 9, because the answers are at the back, i want to
know how that answer was worked out, i tried dividing 5 1/4 12 = .43
which i thought gave 1/12 which it did not from the follwing steps,
then times 12 that just gets me back to 5 1/4 obviously,the question
just stomped me.
