I have travelled extensively, and I agree that the behaviour of banks
in the UK is unusual.
I am British but my only experience with such things is with the USA where I
live and work. I have opened two business accounts here and each time it
was a simple and very fast procedure. I just had to give the bank some
information and a small initial deposit ($100 minimum if I recall
correctly), and the account was set up and I was provided with "starter
checks". I don't know that it is always so easy but I have no reason to
think otherwise. In one case, I was already known to the bank from having
my personal account with them but in the other case I was completely unknown
to them.
It does not surprise me that setting up such an account is a bigger deal in
the UK but I do find it surprising that it is as difficult as has been
recounted here. Darren, please let us know the end of your story when it
happens.
