So the NI/Tax is the same, but the expenses issue is interesting. My
commuting could come to £4,000 pa which I could not claim as a PAYE
employee, so I could tot up expenses for tax relief each year under
this umbrella?

Exactly zero. They can't claim anything that you couldn't with your own
company.
