It's nothing to do with religion these days (thankfully) and everything
to do with reminding everyone life does not stop if the shops shut.

PS Those of you who're coming to the end of a 4-day weekend might like
to reflect on the fact that millions of workers don't get any Bank
Holidays at all. There's no legal right to them. Having said that, I
think we in the UK get far too many holidays, and it's a luxury we can't
really afford in a global economy. I still wish I had more time off
though. :-)
