There is a very strong case for arguing that the US stayed out of WW2
until the British Empire was wrecked and bankrupt, leaving the US in a
very strong post-war position.
However it's very important to remember to draw a distinction between
the often distasteful backroom politics and the individual sacrifices
made by half a million or so Americans. For that we can be grateful,
though no more grateful than to the many, many more Russians and others
who gave their lives to stop Hitler.
