After my iiyama TFT blew up following a power cut, I decided to invest
in a small UPS. Misco are doing a bargain UPS here:

http://www.misco.co.uk/SSinfo/~104704~/Belkin+Superior+Series+UPS+500VA+with+USB+%26+Serial.htm

At £17 plus VAT. I ordered 3, only problem is they charge an extra £5
to ship them as they are bulky, anyway I ended up for 3 at less than
£25 incl VAT.

Also from Insight at £18.79 inc VAT. Don't know what the postage would
be.

Anyone know how long the battery life is in these, what they are and how
expensive they are to replace?

Biggest problem with these is the power rating - it's insufficient for any
modern PC, let alone one with peripherals attached.

For modern PC's you really need on with a rating of at least 650W,
otherwise
you're likely to burn out the battery the first time it goes on standby.

Well this one is rated at 500W and my router, 20" TFT, AMD64-3000 with
3 x HDD, 2xDVDRW and the usual extras use 38% of the power, ie less
than 200W. The battery is supposed to last about 10mins during which
time the PC is powered down. It has a nice USB interface and program.
MISCO =Insight, one quotes +VAT, the other excl VAT.

I suggest that you read the specs again!

"Battery capacity load: 500VA (300W)"
As for your supposed load...
20"TFT - ~65W
AMD64 - ~67W
HD - 3x~30W (spinup wattage) - 100W
RAM - ?~10W
DVD-RW - 2x~25W - 50W
Total (ignoring Motherboard and sound)- 292W

Not a lot of room!!
