No, me neither really. However, it is convenient when you want to move
around the house a bit, or connect quickly in other locations. I always
keep encryption on, and my firewall too.
I'm not at all convinced that the MacOS X 10.6 firewall is doing
anything useful myself - I certainly don't feel that I've got any real
control over it.
There are ways to make it better I believe. Mind you, I also have the
firewall in my router too, so it's just an extra level of protection.

With a wired setup, you're fundaamentally more secure because the only
way in is - well, via the wires, down *that* path, hard to spoof in
novel ways that can't be ruled out completely (as is more likely with
wireless).
Paranoid? Yes, but they're after me anyway... They're after all of us.
Maybe so, but it can be a convenience for some. I certainly wasn't ever
convinced by wireless, but it has become something I found was a
convenient, and economical, solution to being able to move around my
house freely. I do have some ethernet around my house, but it does
restrict where I can sit with my MacBook, and I'd need to run a cable
across whatever room I'm in, and then fix myself to the spot.

I've heard that, erm, Bose (IIRC) have used iPods as the signal source
at shows to demonstrate their kit.
Righto. I appreciate the info, but I never was a big fan of Bose kit -
at least not for domestic purposes.
Pfft - not really the point. The point is more that Bose - a firm which
considers itself high quality - thinks that the iPod is `as good a
signal source as you could want'.
For sure, and that part of your point I did get.
It's probably different now though,
it was years ago when I first heard their kit, and it sounded pretty
awful then. Usually it was used in clubs and wine bars, and typically
setup by the local DJ with the traditional excess bass, and inevitable
distortion.
The only time I've heard really good audio in a place like that was the
Dutch Pancake House in Manchester - which had (IIRC) Leak speakers and
similarly high quality electronics driving it.
Nice.

Aye, I try to use gold plated myself too. If only for a more reliable
connection.
The way I look at it, you either use gold plated or (for heavy duty work
where the connectors are frequently cycled - i.e., band gear etc.)
nickel plated - 'cos anything else is going to get tarnished and
introduce noise.
Indeed.
