The thing is that it's impossible on Usenet to pick up on the normal
cues of facial expression and tone of voice (etc) that would tell
someone in real life that you were joking, so it's necessary to use some
other means of flagging dead-pan humour.
What a wonderful idea. What about using this format to alert the
humour-challenged curmudgeons who don't understand or like people?
