Can you think of a way to investigate/recover from this position?

And perhaps get a working version of OS 9?

Latest reboot, this time:

Restarted with mouse button held down.

Inserted MacOS 10.2 installer disc.

Waited as the thing started up in OS 9.

Then, after `verification and repairs complete successfully', I got an
old fashioned error dialogue box. Bomb!

---------------------------------------------------
Sorry, a system error occcurred.

illegal instruction

To temporarily turn off extensions, restart and hold down the shift key.

I did that, and you know what?

OS 9 started up okay.

I'd forgotten how much I liked the old Finder display. So efficient
compared to OS X!

Could it be the graphics card, do you think? If so, it wouldn't be
/hugely/ awkward to try it with the old one.

If not - any idea how I might start to track down the culprit?

Rowland.

Graphics card requires 10.2.5 or later, so that could be the issue.

I think the ram os9 just won't see it, don't think over 2GB causes it to
crash, but if switching the graphics doesn't cure it, I'd at least pull
a stick to be sure.

To switch from OS9 to OS X you can also hold down the X key during boot
if OS9 didn't boot fully. I only booted the DP up to the welcome setup
screen, so used that method to get back into OS X.
