My daughters PB G4 has died.
Is there a utility that can recover the files.

The screen turns grey, the spinning gear appears, and that's as far as
it goes. I managed to start up from the system disc, hoping to do an
archive install, but the Mac HD didn't show. Disk Utility saw the HD,
but couldn't repair it. Started up with DiskWarrior, it got as far as
replace directory, but couldn't complete.

It sounds as if it's the disk that's gone awol.

Which means my suggestion elsewhere of not bothering to replace the disc
can be ignored totally.

One or other of these might possibly be of some assistance if the HDD is
merely foobar rather than totally expired, if you see what I mean:

isk+recover&srchArea=macosx&submit=Go>

Next step?

t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official>

(the list seems a bit more interesting than when I search for `disk
recovery mac' - but who knows what you'd find either way?)

If the HDD is dead, suggest that your daughter contacts a data recovery
firm and finds out their rates.

And if she wants her data back, she'll know for herself how much it'll
cost her to deal with the fact that she couldn't be bothered to back up
her data.

I do know it's always expensive - /very/ expensive.

I have a hardware RAID enclosure by my feet. Sometime next month, it'll
actually be doing RAID mirroring[1]. And it'll be a backup drive -
holding copies of data I want to keep. It cost money, but *HUGELY* less
than data recovering a dead HDD.

Rowland.

[1] We've had some unexpected expenditure this month so buying two HDDs
wasn't the best idea. I could mention teeth.
