Just whip the disc out and stick it in something else.
Rowland.
You set aside a Saturday afternoon, line up an array of spudgers, get
the iFixit how to guide, get a pile of blue tac, get your torx and jewellers screwdrivers poised for action, polish your reading glasses,
take a stiff drink and go for it.
Oh dear :-/
The MacBook Pro I've just added RAM to had a very readily accessible
HDD.
The old (dead) G3 iBook we've got wasn't very much harder to get into -
slightly trickier, because of the plastic tabby clippy things.
I assumed that it would be a similar job in this case.
Wish it were Roland - it is unnecessarily tortuous - one of Apple's worst pieces of design I think - particularly as it is located inside one of their most beautiful ones.
Put a new one in whilst you are at it before reassembling.
If the Mac in question has died, surely that's a bit pointless?
Sounds like it is just the HD that has died. So if he puts a new one in he should be able to reinstall the system and have a fully functional lappy once again.
Cheers
