A friend is having problems sending e-mails. She is on OS 8.6 (same as
me) and is using Claris Emailer 1.1v3 (same as me).
The only difference is that she has just been connected to BTinternet
broadband whereas I am on UKonline broadband.
I have checked her settings and copied them to my own system, which
gives the same result:

E-mails received OK
Error message below when sending e-mails.

Ticking the box for APOP authentication crashes the login, so that's not

I cannot get any sense from BT's website or helpline, so does anyone
here know what the problem might be and if it can be solved without
telling BT to stuff their service?
I think they're looking for real SMTP AUTH, but it would be good to
know what text came after "(known as". It might also be because port
25's being blocked by her ISP (but not yours). Using port 587 is often
better.
There doesn't seem to be any way of specifying the port in Claris
Emailer (or is that information stored elsewhere in the OS?)
Does receiving mail work?
Yes, there's no problem with that and they can also be sent and received
through her webmail account.
I have put her settings into my copy of CEmailer working through my own
Ukonline connection - and get the same error messages.
