The jumbo Entourage database was always a worry.
Just yesterday Entourage 2004 refused to launch. I installed 2008 and
Entourage 2008 *did* launch and flagged two corrupted messages. Maybe MS has
improved the handling of corrupt databases?
They have - 2004 used to smoosh itself with unwavering regularity, and
was guaranteed to do so when the database went over 4gig. Nowadays
2008 only smooshes itself once a year or so, and my current work db is
6gig with no troubles, and has been over 4gig for about a year.
A colleague had a strange one where Entourage would insist on
rebuilding its database every time he started it (autostart at login,
so this only happened once every month or two in normal usage - shows
how stable it is now!). Turned out to be a copy of "Database - Old"
sat like a turd in the Identities folder, with the wrong permissions
so that it was undeletable. Its presence triggered the "Oh, I must
have been in the middle of a consolidation, better do that instead of
startup normally" routine.

Note that despite substantial evidence to the contrary, it is in fact possible
to delete files copied to the desktop, and you don't need to throw away the
computer and get a new one once the desktop is full. -- Peter Corlett, ASR
