Simple with SPSS, frustrating with Excel (I would think - I doubt if I
would attempt it)

It sounds like a piece of cake with Excel, which has features to bin
data as you want.

Having used SPSS since before there was a version for desktops, I'm
very comfortable with it (at least, the bits I need to use and my needs
now are very simple). I confess that transformations seem like too
much of a faff in Excel and I don't have a clue how to do crosstabs in
it. But then I've never needed to - I've just gone straight to SPSS
instead.

I was interested in PSPP because I no longer have direct access to SPSS
(I have to borrow time on someone else's machine). As no-one's come
forward with direct experience, I reckon I'll just download it and see
how it goes.

Of course, now I'll probably also spend time exploring the darker
recesses of Excel - and it will be all your fault.
