Not quite true. If your email address ends up in an address-book on a
compromised computer, it could be harvested. So, you just have to exchange
email with someone that doesn't know that their PC is a zombie.
Yes, and on top of that, sometimes the spammers just guess. It doesn't
cost them anything if they send to a million nonexistent addresses for
each real one, as inevitably some other poor sod has to deal with the
bounce messages.

Yes, yes, I know all this: my point is that a fresh Gmail account's
pretty spam free, and will remain so unless you're particularly
promiscuous with your email address. Rather than err on the TFH side,
you might as well just accept that kids email accounts will get spam
as they're likely to sign up for sources of spam directly or
indirectly. You could spend a fair amount of time giving them a
squeaky-clean account and you'll still find it full of crap in short
order if they're usage encourages spam.
