I am running Mail 3.5 under 10.5.6 and occasionally I find that one

Correcting this gets things working again for maybe a month or two until

POP3 by any chance? I think Mail treats _any_ POP3 error as fatal and takes
the account offline, when it's almost certainly something trivial like an
authentication timeout.
Retarded thing usually needs to be quit and restarted before it'll get
over it, too. Mail on Tiger wasn't so balshy.
Another trick is when it says "Can't connect to POP server on port
110" and keeps saying so however many times you try.
So I go into Terminal, `telnet popserver 110`, chat to it happily,
then press connect again on Mail and it works.
Grrrrr.
