What on earth have they done? I have the preference set for using my

I don't think they've done anything...

I'm using Firefox 3.0.6/OS 10.4.11 and it all works perfectly, including
downloads to my 'Receive' folder.

Working perfectly here, Firefox 3.0.6, OX 10.5.6, Intel iMac.

Maybe you need to quit Firefox and delete the preference files etc? Or
at least remove them to a safe place so you can put them back if the
download doesn't work after re-launch.

Just tried that, removed every trace of FF and Mozilla and installed
from fresh. Same thing. However, I did try another change this time, I
usually set my downloads folder to my 'Downloads' folder, and a trial
download ended up as a '.part' on the desktop. I reset the destination
to 'Desktop', and the downloads work fine - except for not being where I
want them!

Weird.
