This is educated guesswork, but open the sharing tab in system preferences
(you've probably/hopefully already been here to enable printer sharing -
make sure the printer is selected as shared btw). From there go to file
sharing, choose options and make sure SMB sharing is enabled.
I'm pretty sure I did all that and I can see (and seemingly connect
to) the printer from XP. Using Bonjour made that seem a little more
positive although I'm not convinced all is aok there.
You should now be able to authenticate from the XP machine with the user
that you enabled smb file sharing for in the above step.
Ah, now this might be the bit where I'm going wrong / no doing.
Remember you might
need to specify this user on the XP machine in the format
machinename\username, e.g. "RobsApple\Rob".
Hmmmm, well, I was hoping to make the printer shared to everyone /
guest on OSX as I don't have any issues with anyone using it (and
often want to print for all manner of machines / OS's etc).
I'm fairly sure that's all I did.
Ok, but where / when / how did you actually do that though?
So, say I'm on an XP laptop and can see in my printer list a printer
that was connected via the Bonjour wizard on the Mac as 'ready'? Does
that actually tell us anything? ie, Does it mean there is actually a
printer there, plugged in and ready? Does 'ready' mean that I should
be able to print to it (in fact I can) and it should produce forth
(but it doesn't)?
<checks some stuff>
Ok, XP laptop shows two printers.
1) Canon PIXMA ip4000 on Macmini (Ready) (< installed using the add
printer > Network > browse ... under XP to shared printer on Mini
running XP).
Right clicking on the printer icon allows me to send a test page and
the status monitor pops up in between as well.
Printing anything on the laptop sees the print job come out nearly
instantly.
If I unplug the printer from the Mini I get the (reassuring <g>) 'Ding
dong' and at the same time the printer goes from Ready to Offline on
the XP laptop.
<reboots machine back into OSX and back>
2) Canon ip4000 @ Mac's Mac mini (Ready) (< installed using the add
printer wizard in Bonjour to shared printer on Mini running OSX
(10.5.latest).
Right clicking on the printer icon > Prefs gives me a message telling
me it can't access the printer and I should install the drives (that I
have done previously and do again). All seems to go ok but no
improvement.
Printer shows 'Ready' on the lappy even if unplugged from the Mac?
Just to make sure I'm doing this right I install the drivers for *XP*
on the Laptop don't I? I can't install anything else? <shrugs>.
So a user rights thing still possibly? :-(
