Is it worth me taking out AC now...? Don't want to lose my lifeline!

Hiya all,
I'm rather concerned about Bob. Before you all think "She's lost it
completely this time", I'll explain. Bob is my MBP - he's called Bob
after Mr Calvert (basically because he's a silver machine - yes, I
know...). Anyway, I can'r recall when it started, but there's a fan
(at least I HOPE it's a fan!) under the left speaker which, under
normal usage, just sounds a little louder than usual. However, if I'm
doing something intensive (ripping to iTunes/watching something on
iPlayer/playing a game/playing music from iTunes - especially with
that new Leonard visualisation) then it ramps up to the point where
the rattle (almost - not quite) becomes unbearable and I get scared.
I don't want to lose him, but I can't recall when he was purchased
(and the serial number thingy on Apple's website didn't give me any
clues) and I can't recall whether he was new or a refurb (I suspect
the former as I bought a refurb before I got him and that lasted a
week before the HDD packed up, so once bitten...).
If it is, as I suspect (with my <sarcasm> vast </sarcasm> knowledge of
these things) a worn fan bearing (spoke to Rowland about it once and
he thought the same thing - he suggested putting him on eBay, but that
feels like a betrayal!)
At the time I bought him (I THINK January '07, but I could be wrong
about that - he's a 2nd gen - I recall I preordered at the time and
there was a week before this version was released.) I couldn't afford
A/C but I can - just about! - now.
Would it be prudent to buy an agreement now (even if it's only for a
year) because the cost of a new - even a refurb (though there aren't
any MBPs on the ARS at the moment, the only laptops are Airs) is
prohibitive? He's been my lifeline; he's my first laptop (apart from
an ancient old Winblows thing I had once - so ancient that it came
with Winblows 3.1!) and, when I bought him, I just thought he was an
expensive toy, but he's been invaluable to me (because of my
disability, I spend a great deal of time in my room and without Bob
I'd probably have lost it completely by now! Just discovered the
wonders of iPlayer, but I'm loathe to watch anything just in case it's
the straw that kills him off!
So, what does anyone reckon? Do I plonk down £195 for a year's worth
(if it is a year's worth)? Or do I take him along to the new AS at
White City (which, as I've now done it once, isn't too bad a journey
(and - best of all! - there are NO ESCALATORS!! On the Tube I mean, I
dunno what it is, but I can manage the ones in shopping centres/shops
because they're - usually - not too crowded and I can time it. They
also appear to be a lot slower).
Advice would be very much appreciated, folks!
Cheers m'dears!
Sarah xxx
P.S. He's rattling a bit now (and I have him on a stand).
