Ah, do you mean the ACER Mini Aspire L320? (I didn't think the Asus
had a Vista option). It doesn't look like they support XP on their
site (yet) but if it were me I'd Ghost Vista off and see how XP gets
on (and you know what all the devices are courtesy of Device Manager).
It's an Asus Nova P242/P244. Not sure which one.
Ah, P244. Where did you get it from as there doesn't seem to be much
out there about it?
I've got the software I'll be using working under Vista so I'll stick
with it for now.
Makes sense, especially if it's just going to be mainly doing one job
as such.
Plus I've got the file sharing working without a
password, which is good, so MacOSX can connect quite nicely now[0].

Not the fastest computer in the world but seems to be up to the job,
which is the main thing.
And that's what it's all about innit, suiting your needs at a price
you are willing to pay.
[0] the lack of a password is so the machine can just boot up and log in
by itself without requiring keyboard interaction. Under Vista you can do
this but you need to set some options in the security area to do with
file sharing. Can't remember what they were now but they were quite
obvious once I started looking.
Understood. I don't use passworded login on my machines (inc the Macs
but have on Ubuntu although I'd like to turn it off) and never have
(nothing to hide or protect). I really like the simplicity of the old
password protected shares like we had on W98 etc.

Funnily enough that's pretty well what my little Maplin £29 NAS does
(and maybe why I liked it) ;-)
