Just as a follow-up for anyone planning on doing it...
this morning I installed a new 500 GB disk in my 1st generation iMac G4
(17") 800 MHz giving me a total of 465 GB of available space after
formatting.
Last night I had cloned the contents of the old internal HD onto the new
one while installed in an external case.
The installation went without a hitch, although it took me quite a while
since I had never done anything like it before.
Upon first boot it wouldn't find a startup volume. I popped in an OSX
installer DVD, used the CP to select one and that did the trick.
The new Western Digital HD is noticably quieter than the old one and
applications seem a little snappier, probably due to the 7200 RPM.
Most of all however I'm delighted about the vast gain in disk space.
Thanks everyone for your hints and thoughts!
Martin,
What disk did you use? I am considering doing this and so need to find the
right disk but don't really know where to start. Also when the iMac first
came out I thought they ran the 5400 discs because they gave off less heat is
this correct?
