I've found a few troubleshooters and 'how-tos' on the Web, but none

There isn't anything specific to Leopard for this, it'll be the same
for at least Tiger as well. I don't know 10.3 or before, but I'd be
surprised if they were much different. And since the config is at the
Windows end, it'd be the same for windows-windows sharing too.

The most likely thing is that you've got some software firewall on the
XP box (either XP's own or a 3rd party one), and haven't enabled holes
for file and/or printer sharing. In the XP firewall those should
happen automatically as you share folders or printers (right click on
them, "sharing", and tick the share box). 3rd party could need
anything.

Thanks very much for the thought, Jaimie. I did think about that
myself, and I have had a butcher's - and it is as I expected, my
parents don't have a firewall! Even the crappy native one is switched
off! <rolls eyes and sighs> Doesn't appear to be a hardware one on the
router, either...

If it's a router, there will be - it'll be NATting, which is
sufficient in almost all cases. Leave the XP firewall off while you're
experimenting.

Basic network stuff to try then - can you ping the XP box from the
Mac, and vice versa? What IP addresses are each on? I'm assuming both
get succesful Internet access via the router.

Can the Windows box see itself (and its shared things) in it's own
Network Neighborhood browser?

Just so you know you're not alone - I've had XP and Vista machines do
similar to me on a new install, for no readily apparent reason. All
but one Vista box did finally make it into the network - that last one
could push stuff to other machines, though other machines still
couldn't see it. Doesn't make any sense to me.

        Cheers - Jaimie

WOAH!!! Slow down there, my friend...Whilst I know what NAT stands
for, that is no suggestion that I know what it /does/. I have an idea
that I'm going to land myself in a whole world of hurt if I just go
around prodding this and poking that - I might open up an
interdimensional portal that sucks me into some deity-forsaken
netherworld (oh, wait, I think that's already happened - 'cause I'm
already there!)

Internet access is fine, yes. Occasionally, the MBP will lose
connection to the router (but a reboot - of both Mac and router -
sorts that - or has done so to date...).

Yes, the Windows box can see itself - as for IPs, well the MBP's on
192.168.1.101 and the Windows box - ah, I'm not downstairs at the
moment <runs downstairs to have a butcher's. Thank the gods I've lost
a good few stone!> 192.168.1.100. I've checked the router settings
(it's a WAG325N - couldn't remember before) and it's an SPI firewall
and it's enabled.

Nope, it would appear that I can't ping with Windows box from the Mac:
-

Ping has started ...

PING 192.168.1.100 (192.168.1.100): 56 data bytes

--- 192.168.1.100 ping statistics ---
10 packets transmitted, 0 packets received, 100% packet loss

The Mac is simply refusing to acknowledge that the Windows box exists.
Yes, the Windows box can see itself. I can ping the Mac from Windows.

Does this give you more of an idea...?

Sorry for the reply delay - I needed sustenance (it's nearly 1 and I
realised I'd not even had my brekkie yet!)
