I got one of those anglepoisy type desk lamps today to illuminate my Mac
keyboard. It's got an 11W fluorescent tube in it. Got it home, to
discover what looks like a transformer-brick-type plug. That's a bit
irritating (if that's what it is), since all my low voltage devices
which have such bricks are on a power strip where each socket has its
own switch, so I can keep power consumption down. The unit itself has a
switch nicely placed on the lamp-holder, but I'll use the switch next to
the brick (not so handily placed).
But: the lamp-holder is clearly marked 230-250V 11W, and the brick
itself says the same with no hint of a low output voltage, such as one
normally sees. So what is the brick likely to be if it's not a
transformer? It does say lambda 0.35 if that's any clue.
Probably PL11, and the brick an induction coil.
So don't worry, with the PL11 switched off
the brick will not consume any power.
(unlike a halogen transformer with the secondary switched)
