Also, I'm really not sure I 'get' the Apple way of local network
browsing or how to make shotcuts to Samba shares persistent on the
desktop? I have managed to get a share on the desktop but it seems to
vanish as fast as things can from the dock?
How about a alias (shortcut) to a folder on the share? if you click that
it will connect.
Ah, that seems to have done it (ta). So is that right, you make a
network connection and you get an icon on the desktop but it's just
for that moment (like a network object in 'My Network Places' .. they
are just what the network browsing has turned up) and the Alias is a
hard shortcut to the same place?
Any mounted server that appears on the desktop is temporary (I cant say
for sure, I don't have them set to appear on mine) while it is connected
Lastly, what would I need to do on the Mac to create a share I could
see from the other machines please (Win / Mac / Linux).
Open system preferences, select 'sharing', select 'file sharing', press
the options button, select 'sharing via SMB', and select a user account
to go with it, press ok.
Ah, on this (10.4) I did Sharing > Windows Sharing > Accounts (if it
was the same thing) but it did the job in any case. ;-)
Sorry - wasn't paying attention to the system you had. My instructions
were for 10.5
