Maybe, but it looks to me like the cables are twisting (horizontally)

designs (where they typically use ribbon / film in any case)?

Not for the aerial though?

Indeed not, 'the cables' as in this case (ie, not ribbon).

They generally use separate cables for things other than that, like the
inverter power (spent ages getting one of those through).

;-)

Apples hinges are smaller than a lot of others where there is a lot of
plastic.

Maybe so, but not it seems in the case of the picture shown. After
building / repairing all the stuff I have in my life I'd say that was
a 'p' in a bucket!

It was only last week when I went round PCWorld looking at laptops with
a friend that I realised how huge most PC laptops were.

I have 3 three thin PC laptops in front of me right now.

That is why I said most, rather than all. I was also suprised at how
slow a lot of them were, and they got rather expensive if you wanted a
decent processor. Luckily my friend didn't, he just wanted something
really cheap.

but yes, you are right, it does look like they have been
earthed to the case or something at that point.

I didn't quite say that (not trying to be pedantic) but they could
well be.

I guess with very high frequency it would develop a signal on the
shield, even on a grounded coax.

Yep, the 'skin effect' I mentioned earlier (I'm not sure if it would
exist at the grounded bit but it could exist between such points).

Maybe it is just to be on the safe side, i didn't notice that when I
took mine apart, but mine was one of the first (and had a problem).
Maybe it was to solve signal problems.

Well, you never know and as I said, at this frequency (~ 2.4GHz) all
sorts of things can happen and weird stuff can work (like wave guides
etc).

Anyway, I'm not sure this helps Richard other than identifying the
stripped bits of co-ax are not likely to be part of his problem. ;-)

Agreed - that isn't going to make much of a difference.

What made a huge difference on my wifes one was replacing the network
card with a £12 card I got of ebay. Not only did it work well, it was
also an 'n' card, which the previous one wasn't, which seemed a shame as
mine was an 'n' and so is the router.

The previous one worked, it just didn't seem to work well.
