Thanks, but it doesn't seem to offer Mac software.

Oh, sorry, what about http://showmypc.com/mac/ then?

Is that a personal recommendation for something you have used, or just a
Google result?

Samaritans no (I have their number in my phone in any case), showmypc
in the Windows form, loads (especially handy with MSN IF they can copy
/ paste the pass key across).

I am currently trying to access my Windows box from my Linux lappy (as
an experiment for myself / you) but as usual Linux has me pissing
about finding Java packages in Synaptics Package manager, it crashing,
me repairing it, removing a crashed packaged, re installing Java ...
give us another hour or so .. <sigh>

Because even setting aside the expired security
certificate (worrying when the service involves both allowing access to
my home Mac and downloading an untrusted application on my work PC), I
can't actually get it to work - it always claims I have the wrong
password.

Hmm, ok, well whenever I've seen that in the past it either was the
wrong key (finger trouble) or they has multiple instances of the
client running (not the case with you now but ..).

Assuming it *did* work, that looks to be almost what I am after.

I know.

Although the people I am helping may struggle to open a browser and
locate a webpage [1] I could drop a link into the dock or something, and
just hope it doesn't get accidentally dragged out.

You could try (that's what I do on Windows boxes but they aren't quite
so drag > 'poof' (gone) as with MacDock).

[1] Have you noticed how many people can't understand the difference
between a web address and a Google search? I've seen so many people type
in www.somesite.com/somethingelse into the Google search box rather than
the address bar...

Yup.

Luckily it often comes up with what they intended. I've found it a
handy way of going to a site without leaving mention of it in the
browser links drop down pre fill thingy. ;-)
