In like a Porsche is 'better' than my Rover you mean?
No. Like the current mondeo is better than the one from 10 years ago.
Ah, yes, heavier and more complicated. ;-)
No, what I meant was "I haven't noticed enough better things to
warrant the difficulties" (to me). Difficulties not only getting round
the system but the added compatibility issues (which still exist even
now) and the potential of a hardware upgrade. Of the (5 so far)
machines that were shipped with Vista, were suffered by their new
owners then at their request were 'upgraded' to XP (by me), none have
regretted it for one second.
It is true that they sell some machines that shouldn't be put with vista
on them.
Indeed, but not the reason even one of the folk I'm referring to
'upgraded' to XP. Well that and an OS that does little if anything
more than XP for a good number of users. Anyway, "I just don't like
it" is sufficient justification if there are no tangible reasons why
you should. ;-)
It still feels like driving an automatic, an automatic that decides on
it's own when to change gear, even if you stick it in '1' manually
(that's when you have found the gear stick in the first place that
is).
<shrug> I prefer automatics.
I don't mind autos (I've had a few) but I wouldn't generally choose
one over a manual (more to go wrong, less economical, more expensive
to buy new etc).
I am not a boy racer (although actually the
fto is pretty impressive with its gear box)!
FTO eh .. why, may I ask? Dad had a Galant for a while (Co car) ...
seemed ok (for a car).
Well I have, had to try and sort stuff out on it, many times, but I am
still not sure where stuff is, or if I getting to it the right (as in
most efficient) way.
You have many more years of practice.
Yes master ... or not, if I can help it! ;-)
Maybe, but my point was more to do with Vista being the first version
of Windows that has confused / frustrated me so (or so much), and I'm
going back to (from a support pov) 3.1.
So it was easier to setup 3.1?
Oh yes!
I remember it being damn difficult to get
it work well.
On the A+ Software support course I used to present we used to get the
delegates to 'upgrade' MSDOS V6.2 to W95 (current at the time). For a
laugh (and because it took no time) I (personally) got them to install
3.1 as a stepping stone between DOS and 95. Those that hadn't seen it
before (and there were quite a few) were 1) amazed how fast it
installed and 2) more amazed how fast it ran! They installed the video
and sound drivers and it was all ok. They then went on to install 95
then W2K (later XP) and had triple boot and saw the general use of the
machines get slower.
Indeed, however, I'm not sure (from my engineering rather than
creative user pov of course <g>) what was wrong with XP? (especially
in comparison with Vista).
From an engineering point of view it is more stable and has better
security.
Ah, neither issue bothers me (or most of the users I know) so again,
not an improvement to me (us).
It bothers me. I have to buy spam filters to make up for the fact that
most of the users of XP have caused me problems, and I don't even have
to use it.
So is that unique to XP or any simple user friendly non imposing OS?
Is it more the problem of user training? There are times when safety
equipment can make things more dangerous? [1]
