The Linksys WRT54GR arrived. I plugged it all in. Then went to the set
up page which has lots of queries about DCHP la la la. I get a few from
System Prefs, but am stumped by the rest and the router web page won't
let me do anything. I am about to give up and ask Here/Virgin MEdia/etc
when I launch Mail for the hell of it, and find emails coming in, and
Safari working fine, and the laptop connected also by ethernet to be
working fine too.

Is a cable connection simpler than ADSL through the phone line??

Probably, yes.

Routers are really pretty simple. The LAN side will work for most people
using the default settings "out of the box".

The WAN side of a cable router relies on a cable modem. It might be
necessary to provide the modem with a username and password, but if the
modem has already been used on the cable connection, it might already have
the correct configuration. If it doesn't work, the diagnostics from the
cable modem are usually minimal, so you have to try switching everything off
then applying power in adifferent sequence (either modem first, then router,
or vice versa).

The WAN side of an ADSL router has a built-in modem for the ADSL connection.
This normally needs a username and password, but might be just the username
(possibly any username) without a password depending on the ISP. You might
also have to set the VPI & VCI values, and specify PPPoA - but most routers
will take you through a setup wizard that provides the correct values when
you select the correct country. If you find entering this information is
not simple then you could argue that ADSL is more complicated than cable.
Further, if the phone wiring does not carry the ADSL signal properly then
the diagnostics in the router may help you resolve this.

In general all questions that relate to DHCP as it affects the WAN
connection will be specified by the nature of that WAN connection and the
ISP, and you should simply use the defaults.

So far as the LAN side is concerned, the default will normally be for the
router to run a DHCP service which allocates parameters to the connected
clients, so unless you have specific reasons for making changes (which you
would understand) then leave everything at the default settings.

The only aspect of the router you should take control of is the wireless
security. Always do this from a computer connected by ethernet cable to a
LAN port; and make a note of the settings. Then use the same security
settings on the client computers.
