Certainly less dangerous, I doubt it would be cheaper. It cost me £17
inc shipping.

Surprisingly, it really was cheaper. I got a D-Link DWL-G122
from PC World for 15.94. (It costs more if you don't pre-order it
on the web.)

Of course, you have to factor in the unpleasantness of dealing with PC
World. Because I had ordered it in advance, I couldn't just take one
off the shelf. Instead I had to queue up behind all the people
returning faulty goods, which I suspect they just re-seal and sell
again.

The first person being served had brought back a faulty mains cable.
Initially they refused to replace or refund it, but gave in after
being shown the melted plastic around the pins.

The man in front of me had bought a reduced item which he had been
assured was in perfect working order, but in fact didn't have a power
supply, despite the plastic wrap being unbroken. They wouldn't give
him a complete version in exchange. When he complained, the assistant
walked away, accusing the man of "shouting" - which he wasn't. Are
PC World assistants instructed to use this tactic, or do they think
it up by themselves?

They had my adaptor ready and waiting - but it was the wrong one.
Fortunately I noticed this, as I had of course chosen the only one
that advertised working with a Mac.
