Well, for a start, the original 'texdoc sectsty' now works! and I only
scolled back and hit Enter, so it wasn't a typo. Oh well.
Yes, I see your approach for sure, it's very, er, 'TeX' like. Which is
what I expected. Although as I see it, this is basically one feature?
Keep It Simple, Stupid. But that depends on what you mean by `one
feature'. It's got a few bells and whistles if you're interested in
that sort of thing.
No, KISS is a philosophy I like :-)

Insecure I can go with, but unreliable, maybe not. I am running mine
with linked (by Ethernet) Airport Extreme and Express modules, two Macs,
two USB printers, one Ethernet printer, and one USN hard drive. It's all
workign very reliably indeed.
I've heard from a lot of people who have a lot of trouble with wireless
networking's reliability. And in any case, why reduce my networking
speed to what you get with wifi, eh? With my current setup, I get
100Mb/s point to point between all devices and I would have 1Gb/s in one
case if I had more than just this 4G5 with gigabit Ethernt.
Well 802.11n gives 130Mb/s, although not actually as well as 100Mb/s on
Ethernet admitedly, it is proving to be fast and stable here. I actually
store videos on the networked USB drive, and stream them to my MacBook,
which in turn streams to Airtunes to play the audio through my HiFi (Oh
look, WiFi on a HiFi!)

I can't say I agree with you there, for me it has got much more useful
than my first experience of Mac OS (which you may remember was 7.5)
One problem is that the full package is more useful these days for all
that the software has got less user friendly and more flaky.
Again, not what I'm seeing. So far, OS 10.5 has been *very* reliable
indeed, much more reliable than OS 7.x was, and even better than OS 8.1
(which I never had any trouble with).
For example: I'm still using a System 7 era text search and replace
tool, because there is nothing for OS X that'll do the job I want to do.
OK. I thought you could still invoke the old tool in OSX (Command-F in a
document), or has that been reduced in function?

But they are not remotely like manuals.
I used to set up SuperBase relational databases at one time, and having
a printed manual beside me on the desk was invaluable. Likewise, when
I'm using LaTeX I still use the old Leslie Lamport book.
I hope it's the `not so old' edition - if you're trying to use LaTeX 2e
with the first edition of Lamport's book, you're very weird.
It's printed in 1986, but I still find it useful. Besides, it's what I
have!
However, I
still do far more with other software now, all without a manual. It's
one of the reasons I do stick with Apple software, as what I do is
pretty consistent across the board.
Aside from the Finder (and other such fixtures), the only apps that came
with the Mac that I use frequently (excluding the contents of
/Apps/Utils/) are:
iTunes, DVD Player, TextEdit, GraphicConverter, Preview, QuickTime
Player, Safari (only when Firefox has trouble because Safari is very
unreliable).
Safari is getting better now though, and I have very little bother in
OS10.5. I generally find that pages that don't work in Safari now, tend
not to work in anything else.
Six of the `came with the OS' apps I use are purely for displaying
information (one was not written by Apple and does have a manual).
TextEdit is the one exception. If I want to do some work, I use other
stuff.
I think TextEdit is a very under used app myself.
Okay, so I use AppleWorks - but its WP and drawing modules are not very
good compared to MacWrite II and MacDraw II if you ask me, and the
documention is so poor that I've never been able to work out how to use
it *properly* (the CW 1 manual is the best CW/AW manual and yes I do
have a copy). All I use it for is maintaining a handful of simple
databases - nothing else. Printing of the data is handled by LaTeX
because AppleWorks does such a poor job of it.
Yes, I like AW too, but find Pages does more for me now (mainly with
media sharing from other apps).
I do wish more had been made of Publish and Subscribe, and back in the
days when we had balloon help, I found it really really useful in cases
where it was implemented properly. Shame it got dropped due to
application programmer laziness in not bothering to make use of it.
Yes, that didn't sem to last long did it?
Dictionary.app gets a little use. I used to use Sherlock an awful lot
before OS X came out, but I couldn't work out how to use the OS X
version sensibly so I've not used it since getting OS X.
I never saw the point of Sherlock, until it was too late.
I would not buy an Apple app if I had any choice - I'd look for
something with a proper manual and proper support. The proper manual is
one reason I bought Mailsmith and have never seriously considered using
Mail.app.
OK, seems fair enough.
