Re: Best ADSL router?

What's the consensus on the best ADSL router? My father needs one now he's
been converted from the dark side. He doesn't need wireless, though my
guess
is it's silly not to.

The main thing, I guess, is that it should be easy to configure, since
that's
about the only thing I can't do for him using Screen Sharing.

I hear good things of the Buffalo AirStation, though it only claims to be
Windows compatible, which, even if it isn't, counts against it in my book.

(It's a router, for goodness' sake. What's not to be compatible? Oh, the
configuration, I guess. Maybe only works with Internet Explorer version
0.3
or something.)

Basic routers are very cheap - see:
http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=584405
http://www.equanet.com/catalogue/item/A0290144

This one provides:

1) DDNS client - so you can always find out your ISP-dynamic address from
elsewhere.

2) Access control option - so that you can nominate those IP addresses from
which you want to allow remote access (good for security!)

3) Port forwarding - so you can specify which application you allow to
communicate with the "home" computer.

4) DHCP pool summary - so you can identify the internal computer for which
you wish to set up port forwarding

.... as well as all the basic features you would expect.

Many more expensive routers miss out on some of these features.

It would be nice for it to have a built-in ping facility so it could test
connectivity to a local PC, for example.

As others have said, ignore the supplied CD and configure it from a web
browser.
