Not rare enough for me, if the (admittedly debatable) statistics
are true. There are enough dead-drive posts here to make me think
they might well be true. As you yourself once wrote:

But then, there's no reason to suppose you are a typical Mac user.

I think the last line nails it.

I suspect that most *computer users*, never mind Mac users, will take
their machine to be repaired if the drive fails. Or just buy a new one.
