After looking at lots of digital picture frames in various shops, trying out
sample pictures on a memory card, I finally settled on a Kodak EX811 as a
father's day present for my dad. I'm going to preload it with pictures of his
grandson. It had the best picture reproduction I could find and seemed to
tick all the other boxes.
Anyway, one consideration - we both have Macintosh computers. 10.5.x. So, the
box for this thing proclaims WiFi wireless, and compatibility with Mac OS.
Great, I thought. Sounds ideal.
Except... The fucking (sorry) wireless doesn't work with Mac OS. They don't
tell you that on the fucking (sorry) box. It finds my network, and the stupid
software Kodak supply (easy share) has a Wireless configuration bit in it but
oh no. In the documentation, the wireless instructions are to download
Windows Media Player 11. No alternative (officially) provided for Mac OS. No
Mac specific instructions.
A google showed I need to purchase some crapware called Twonky (20 quid) to
get some semblance of WiFi compatibility with this picture frame and our
Macs.
I've sent a snotty email to Kodak. I mean, why bother even mentioning Mac OS
X on the box if the major differentiating feature of this particular frame
doesn't work with it.
Oh wait. I know why.
Bastards.
Being one of those dad things you mention, I got one for Christmas. It
is exactly as crap as you describe, plus an inability to use a SD card.
USB stick or CF is OK. For small values of OK. It is now forgotten in
cardboard box somewhere.
No wonder Kodak is going tits up at the speed of a thousand gazelles.
