I'd be tempted by one of these:

How are much are the enclosures ? I need to get going on this, if you
could hear the constant hum this Lacie drive makes it would drive you
mad. No point having a near silent mac with this beast beside it.

I dealt with most of the noise produced by a 1GB external drive from
years back by making a sound deadener using carpet tiles and Evostick,
carefully arranged to provide a sound absorbing tunnel for air flow that
didn't obstruct the air flow at all - in fact, probably improved airflow
if you looked at the `before' and `after' states (the inlet and exhaust
were underneath the box - my rig increased clearance underneath quite
considerably, as well as separating inlet and exhaust flows).

Oh yeah, and I glued cut-up foam mouse mat to surfaces inside the case
(3.5" HDD in a case big enough for a 5.25" drive) which helped knock out
a lot of the nasty high pitched irritation too.

They all *whine*, do these HDDs, even ignoring fan noise. Remote
positioning of the external disc box and some kind of sound absorbing
material strikes me as necessary.

Rowland.
