Anyone recommend a quiet external HD around 1TB ? I have a Lacie 500GB
drive but it really is quite loud and vibrates the entire desk. I am
going to move my iTunes library to the external drive.
Thanks in advance
A couple of months ago I bought a 1TB WD My Book Pro Edition II for an
editing job - pretty quiet after an initial spin of its fan. It was only
editing DV and used connected by FW800. One interesting "feature" is an
on/off button on the front which is at the same height as a coffee cup
handle. This caused a little excitement as all the clips in the two
weeks of FCP editing instantly went offline.
Feels quite solid FWIW. I have it set up as RAID 0. It might no longer
be available - it's the one with two FW 800s, a FW 400 and a USB2. There
was a period when the fans were running for a while, but even then it
wasn't too noisy.
I've just ordered another WD to use as a mirrored RAID:

Not arrived yet and I'm already wishing I'd gone for the 2TB. There are
quite a few My Book horror stories online, often about fan noise or disk
failure so who knows. The one linked above has no fan (cue UCSM
favourite topic) but is only going to be used for backing up so
shouldn't have particularly hard use.
Recently I bought this caddy:
e_55394>
It was quite quiet with a large fan on the top surface, but the
connection to the power supply was a bit dodgy giving shorts and
eventually smoke coming from inside the caddy. Not recommended, but it
could just have been a dud. SVP were great about refunding.
The above was replaced by this:

Really fast delivery from Storage Depot, um, interesting construction of
the caddy, but its fan is a bit too loud for comfort. Not a problem
since it's being used for Time Machine backups for a MacBook.
