Hi All,
Someone in here (Jaimie?) has had Time Machine working backing up to a
non-Apple NAS.
I could use SuperDuper to backup to a networked disk image, but Time
Machine appeals as it'll just do it in the background.
Has anyone got it working safely - sparse disk images - ?
In the event of a failure, how would you restore? Boot off the
Leopard DVD and import the contents back? Do a fresh install of
Leopard and migrate the contents over?
Although you can get Time Machine to backup to non-Time Capsule network
drives (ethernetted SMB in my case) it would _appear_ that you won't be able
to do a full recovery from this, only individual files by launching the Dock
app.
In other words it's a bodge, and really shouldn't be used instead of a
'proper' backup solution. I use it simply because I can't afford a new
external drive yet, so it's better than nothing.
Tips on how to set it up are here:

and a pretty good warning on why you shouldn't use this here:

Always remember: the words "backup" and "bodge" do not belong in the same
sentence.
