I remember doing some programming with 7 bit bytes.

Tell me more.

It seems I was wrong - it was on the PDP-10 which has 36 bit words and
variable size bytes.

Thing is, I was always told it had variable sized /word length/. That
exact terminology, and it was computery people (albeit of my age or not
far off) who told me.

Words have never had a physical size specified from them

What does that mean? I've been told about 16 bit word length and so on
computing.

(although the yoof
often think they do, as the only computer you get is windows).

Er? What?

One of those people had designed his own 68000 2nd CPU box for his BBC
Micro, and then written his own compiler for it. Pretty impressive, I
thought.

I wrote a compiler for a 6809 once. Good fun compilers. I also made a few
68000 computers, although none connected to my bbc.
In fact I suspect I still have one of them.

Coo! The Beeb's Tube interface means you don't need to build a computer
- you just need to plug in a CPU.

This same chap also only washed once a week, for the visits of a
particular young lady (hello Paula :-) ).

Yes. I knew people like that. In fact I was probably not too far off that
back then. Well, the washing, not the toilet!

Not bothering to wash didn't /puzzle/ me. The one log per week did.

I've long kept myself clean - since my dad re-did the bathroom and
fitted a shower, to be precise, but I'm damned if I can recall when that
was. Possible 1970-something. My bowel movements are my own business
and I expect you're all very happy it's being kept that way.

One of the things I love about not living in shared student accomodation
any more is not having to poke someone else's turds past the U-bend.

I am glad I no longer live in shared accomodation. It can be fun, but it can
be a real pain in the arse. Especially the food squabbles.

Never any worries there for me. Washing up once nearly led to me being
hit - someone else's failure to do it properly, that is. Objecting to
abovementioned smelly chap hassling Paula (long story) did get me hit -
although what with him being a pathetic drunken veggie and me still
being stupid enough at that time to keep up with playing rugby, his
punch to my face was completely irrelevant and he went away when I told
him to behave himself.

I think he was surprised that my sole reaction to him punching me in the
face as hard as he could was to say `<name>, behave yourself'.

There was a restriction to use 7 bit bytes though. I cant remember why,
but it was 20 something years ago

ASCII is 7 bits.

Certainly nothing to do with ascii.

<shrug> You've provided no context at all. It's one of the few `this
has to be 7 bits' that I know of.

Rowland.
