Can anyone recommend an alternative email address that I can configure
Mail.app to seamlessly access?
Did consider gmail but have yet to find any clear instructions as to how
to set it up for exclusive use through Mail.app

gives a few details I don't think were obvious in the Apple setup.
Basically its like setting up a standard pop account but you need to
enable authentication & they use a non standard port. Can be setup in
minutes no hassle.
You can then tell Gmail to archive or delete emails once they've been
downloaded by pop so if you use webmail access from time to time you'lll
only see new emails there. I've now moved to IMAP and generally either
use webmail or the GMail app for my Nokia N73.
I gave up on the ISP email services a couple of years ago, and switched
to Gmail. So far it's been very reliable, has a very good spam filter,
and saves both incoming and outgoing messages on the webmail account.
Setting up for Mail.app is actually pretty easy, you just need to set up
the secure server bits, which should be covered in the other replies you
got.
Remember to activate POP mail in the Gmail account though.
FWIW, Yahoo mail is pretty unreliable. I have one account for using with
Freecycle, and my sister uses one too, but they are often not working.
