I almost hesitate to ask in this bastion of the SLR, but...
I'm after a truly simple, small camera that preferably doesn't need a
dock for recharging - recharging over USB would be ideal in fact. 5
megapixels fine, anything else considered a bonus. And Mac happiness is
a given.
Am suspicious of Sony a) by nature b) by memory stick media and c)
because the last one we had needed a dock and power supply whose
combined volume was more than ten times that of the actual camera (no
exaggeration), meaning if I wanted to take it on holiday all the size
advantage of a small camera was lost.
Any ideas? I -know- about the SLRs, but honestly the smaller the camera
is the larger the chance I'll actually take it somewhere and use it. I
know I wouldn't carry a large camera.
I agree about the Sony stuff. I got a small camera last year for just
bunging into a pocket, and spent a while looking hard at these. I
actually would have gone for a Ricoh Caplio, as they have a fantastic
lens on them (28-105mm equiv.).
However, I went for an Olympus Mju500 in the end, as it had a couple of
key features I needed - weather proof, and very good image quality at
5MP. Indeed, after a good look at some test pics, I came to the
conclusion that 5MP was about optimum on a compact digital. The hard
driven small sensors seemed to produce more noise, and less sharp images
at higher MP.
You'll find a lot of test pics to browse through here:
